How to Embed Windows Media Files

The example video clip on the right is an embedded Windows Media file. Embedded means that the player itself is embedded in the web page. For this to work the user must have Windows Media Player installed.

Embedding a video file is achieved by inserting a block of code in the web page’s HTML. There are many variations on the code you can use, depending on whether you want to show video controls, status displays, etc.

The Code

The example below shows the code for embedding a Windows Media file. Note that it uses two tags: and . This is to enable maximum browser compatibility.You will need to set the file name (and other attributes if required) for both tags. Use true or false for the tag, 1 or 0 for the tag.

To get started, all you have to do is copy the code above into your web page and replace videofilename.wmv with your own file name.

If you want to get more advanced you can alter the parameters below. Note that including extra features such as the status bar requires the player to have more height. Where applicable, we have shown the number of pixels required — if necessary, add this number of pixels to the height parameter.

Autostart

If this value is set to true/1, the video will begin playback as soon as it has buffered. Otherwise it will wait for the user to press Play .

ShowControls

If this value is set to true/1, the video transport controls will be shown ( play , stop , pause , etc). If it is set to false/0, the controls will not be shown and the user will not be able to control playback at all. Obviously, in this case you would need to have autostart enabled or there will be no way to play the video.

ShowStatusBar

If this value is set to true/1, the status bar is shown. This includes the buffering progress and playback status of the clip. Showing the status bar is a good idea as it shows the user how long they have to wait before the clip will be ready for playback

ShowDisplay

When set to true/1, this displays information such as the file name.

This is the HTMLView feature of Windows Media metafiles. When you want to supplement your digital media with HTML, on the other hand, you can display webpages in the full mode of the Player by referencing them in Windows Media metafile playlists.

Overview

Using HTML with Windows Media Player is an excellent way to combine audio and video with text and graphics. You can embed the windows media player control in a webpage when you want to supplement your static content or create Web applications with digital media. When you want to supplement your digital media with HTML, on the other hand, you can display webpages in the full mode of the Player by referencing them in Windows Media metafile playlists.

If you write custom programs that embed the Windows Media Player control in remote mode, you can also control the webpages displayed in the various panes of the full mode of the Player when your users undock the control. This lets you preserve continuity between the docked and undocked states.

Script Commands and URL Flipping

Script Commands are text/value pairs you can embed in your digital media files or streams. You might use custom Script commands solely to trigger script code, while letting Windows Media Player handle other script commands automatically.

When you have several webpages that accompany a digital media presentation, URL script commands can automatically change the page in one frame while the Windows Media Player control continues playing digital media in another frame. This is called URL flipping, and is an excellent way to create a multimedia slide show. Other automatically handled script commands let you switch playback to a different media file or stream, display captioning text, or trigger events such as ad insertions defined in a Windows Media metafile playlist.

Rich Media Streaming

URL flipping works best with simple pages that load rapidly. With more complex pages, multiple components are transferred individually, making it difficult to synchronize page display with digital media. To allow complex rich media presentations, webpages can be added to a media stream and delivered to the Player in the same way as audio and video. This lets you synchronize the components of your presentation much more easily, especially over low-speed connections.

Browser Support

You can embed the Windows Media Player control in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Netscape Navigator, although the process is slightly different for each. You can also create webpages designed to work with all three browsers.

With Internet Explorer and Firefox, you embed the control using the HTML OBJECT element. Navigator requires a different approach, however, because it doesn’t directly support ActiveX controls. With Navigator, you use the APPLET element to embed a special Java applet into the page. This applet handles communication with the Player ActiveX control.

Displaying Web Pages in the Full Mode of the Player

You can extend the functionality of Windows Media Player or provide a custom view of information that accompanies your digital media by displaying webpages in the full mode of the Player. This is the HTMLView feature of Windows Media metafiles. Metafiles give you great control over playlist content, allowing you to seamlessly transition between clips, insert advertisements, and display still images in Windows Media Player. To display webpages in the full mode of the Player, you use the PARAM element to add URL references to your playlist entries or to entire playlists.

I do not know if this is a mozilla issue or a vista issue, but anyhow it is anoying! 🙂

Firefox 3 RTM Problems Windows Media Player Plugin port 25

This is probably not the best place to be posting this problem (probably should go to firefox), but the Windows Media Player Plugin from Port 25 does not seem to completley work with Active X / WM applications. For a specific setup I would look towards www.mediasite.com ( my grad school classes are pushed through them). Anyways ever since I have tried RC1-RC3 to the RTM version of Firefox there have been issues.

Video plays fine though Windows Media Player on a website, but slides that are supposed to activley update never render. Anyways this always worked in Firefox 2.0.14 and it even works now in Firefox 3 on Mac OS X. However it works on OS X because it is rendered through Silverlight.

So my question is how do I get this problem fixed or how do I force it to render in Silverlight on Windows Vista SP1.

On the topic of silverlight why are the Windows Media Player plugins and active x still being pushed? If Silverlight is the way to go, then I say jump ship and use just that. Just a thought. more seems confusing.

Ok I figured out a way to make it work. At the end of the URL it says Port25. You need to replace it with SL1, which I guess stands for Silverlight 1. This is what Mac OS X pages default to for mediasite. All works well when you do this. So this tells me that the bug lies within Port 25 and its compatibility with Firefox 3.

BTW I got this to work using Silverlight 2.0 beta 2 through Firefox 3.

How can I specify where to install Win Media Player Firefox Plugin?

When I install it (whether I go to the MS website to download it, or click on «download missing plugin» link in browser) it always installs into D Drive (D:\P_Files)

Copy or move the file that was created to the Firebox Program Files|PLUGINS folder.

If there is no such folder, create one. The file may be named NPDSPLAY.dll.

My main reason to ask this question is that I don’t like the plugin folder to be in D Drive, because I sometimes reformat the D drive.

As noted, you can copy the plugin. In fact, FF may find it in your Chrome or Dragon plugin folders, because it has a SEARCHPLUGINS feature.

Here, there is no FF plugin folder, yet clicking on TOOLS|ADDONS|PLUGINS lists every plugin that is installed on this PC. It sees them.

OK, I will just set the PFIles folder to hidden now. But the problem is totally unresolved. Every time after reformatting D Drive I have to reinstall the plugin (for all browsers). No matter I install it from FF, Chrome, Dragon or IE the plugin goes into D Drive.
